Urostomy Surgery

urostomyWhen an artificial opening (stoma) is created surgically for the urinary system it is called a urostomy.  This procedure is indicated when drainage of urine from the bladder is not possible through the urethra or when the bladder has been removed.  The need for a urostomy can be caused by extensive surgery or severe obstruction of the urinary tract.

Urostomy pouches are special bags that are used to collect urine after bladder surgery. Urine will drain outside of your body into this bag instead of through the urethra. The stoma is the part that sticks outside your abdomen.
